According to her son Tanveer, Jafri took her last breath at around 11.30 am. She spent her last moments with her beloved daughter Nishrin Jafri in Ahmedabad city.
Ahmedabad: A tragic news has emerged from Gujarat, where Zakia Jafri, widow of former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri, passed away in Ahmedabad on Saturday due to age-related issues. Zakia was a survivor of the Gulberg Society massacre that took place on February 28, 2002. She was 86. According to her son Tanveer, Jafri breathed her last at around 11:30 am. She spent her final moments with her beloved daughter, Nishrin Jafri, in Ahmedabad.
“My mother was visiting my sister’s house in Ahmedabad. She completed her daily morning routine and was chatting normally with her family members when she complained of feeling uneasy. The doctor, who was called in, declared her dead around 11:30 am,” PTI quoted Tanveer as saying.
As per reports, Zakia will be buried beside her husband in the city.
Zakia’s husband, Ehsan Jafri was among the 68 people who died inside the gated Gulberg Society in the Chamanpura area of Ahmedabad. The Gulberg Society massacre had taken place a day after coaches of the Sabarmati Express train were burnt in Godhra, resulting in the deaths of 59 ‘karsevaks’ returning from Ayodhya.
It is worth noting that Ehsan Jafri, was one of the 68 people who lost their lives in the Gulberg Society, located in the Chamanpura region of Ahmedabad. This tragic event occurred the day after the Sabarmati Express train coaches were set on fire in Godhra, leading to the deaths of 59 ‘karsevaks’ who were returning from Ayodhya.
Gujarat Riots 2002
The 2002 Gujarat riots was the three-day period of inter-communal violence in Gujarat. The riots started following the burning of a train in Godhra on 27 February 2002. The train incident caused the deaths of 58 Hindu pilgrims returning from Ayodhya. Following the initial riots, further outbreaks of violence in Ahmedabad were reported for three months.
In 2006, Zakia Jafri submitted a complaint accusing the police to not registering a complaint against then chief minister of the state and now Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other politicians in connection with the deadly riots.
