New Delhi: Bangladesh has formally requested India to extradite former Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina.

“We confirm that we have received a Note Verbale from the Bangladesh High Commission today in connection with an extradition request. At this time, we have no comment to offer on this matter,” said the sources.

Shiekh Hasina has been living in India since August 5.

The 76-year-old former Bangladesh prime minister resigned and fled the country on August 5 following violent protests against her over jobs quota ruling.

She arrived in India on the same day where she was received by India’s National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval upon her arrival at Hindon Airbase in Ghaziabad.

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) expressed displeasure over Sheikh Hasina’s stay in India. Veteran BNP leader Gayeshwar Roy said, “If you help our enemy then it becomes difficult for mutual cooperation between Bangladesh and India to be honoured.”

For the unversed, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and the Bangladesh Awami League or simply called the Awami League are two major political parties in the country and they are bitter rivals, almost to the extent of enmity.

Sheikh Hasina fled Bangladesh on August 5 this year and has been living in New Delhi since then. When she came to India, it was said that it would be her temporary stay but it did not happen. She tried to seek political asylum in many countries but could not succeed. Hence she is forced to stay in India. However, there are voices in Bangladesh demanding that Sheikh Hasina is extradited.

Her government has been accused of ordering mass violence and suppressing student movements, during which hundreds of people died.
