YouTube has announced some big changes to improve how videos look and perform on television screens. The company says more people are now watching YouTube on their living room TVs. This makes YouTube a new form of prime-time entertainment. Because of this, viewers expect better quality, and creators want stronger ways to stand out and earn more.
YouTube shared that TV screens are becoming a major revenue source for creators. Over the past year, the number of YouTube channels earning six-figure revenue mainly from TV viewing has grown by more than 45 percent. In India alone, YouTube reached over 75 million people aged 18 and above on connected TVs in April 2025. This growing audience is pushing YouTube to redesign the TV experience for both creators and viewers.
So, one of the biggest updates is around visual quality. YouTube will soon increase the thumbnail size limit from 2MB to 50MB. This allows creators to upload high-quality 4K thumbnails that look sharp on large screens. The company is also testing larger video-on-demand uploads with select creators to support better playback quality on TVs.
YouTube is also introducing an AI-powered feature that can enhance older videos. This tool will automatically upscale standard-definition videos to high definition at no extra cost. The original video file will remain unchanged, and creators will have full control to opt out if they want. In the future, YouTube plans to support upscaling up to 4K resolution.
Beyond video quality, YouTube is improving how channels appear on TV. Immersive previews, which automatically play videos, are expanding to the home screen and search results. This helps viewers quickly discover content without extra clicks. YouTube is also continuing to roll out its updated shows layout, making it easier for creators to organize videos into collections that feel more like TV shows and are easier to binge-watch.
Search on TV is also getting smarter. When viewers search from a creator’s channel page, videos from that channel will now appear at the top of results. This change helps creators keep viewers within their content instead of losing them to unrelated videos.
YouTube is also turning the TV screen into a shopping platform by adding QR codes that viewers can scan to open product pages on their phones. The company is also testing timed product placements, where items appear at specific moments in a video. This makes shopping more natural and reduces the steps between watching and buying.
YouTube says TV is now its fastest-growing screen. So, the company remains focused on making sure creators can upload once and still deliver a high-quality experience across phones, laptops, and TVs.
