It has been a chaotic day for users of X (formerly Twitter) as the platform suffered a widespread outage. Thousands of users were unable to log in or access their feeds. While technical glitches are nothing new, this time, the disruption was attributed to a massive cyberattack. Elon Musk confirmed it as a highly sophisticated attack against X.
On March 10, 2025, users worldwide began experiencing issues with X. Reports flooded Downdetector, showing that tens of thousands were struggling to access the platform. The outage was not limited to one region. It affected users in multiple regions including the United States, United Kingdom, France, and India.
Elon Musk took to X and blamed the disruption on a large-scale cyberattack. He hinted that the attack required significant resources. So, It could be the work of a coordinated hacking group or even a nation-state.
A group calling itself “Dark Storm Team” has allegedly claimed responsibility, stating they launched a DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack against X. For those unfamiliar, a DDoS attack floods a server with excessive traffic, effectively overwhelming it and making the platform inaccessible. If true, this would explain why so many users struggled to load posts, log in, or access key features.
For millions of users, X is their primary source of news, discussions, and trends. With the platform down, many were left frustrated. Many of these users were also searching for alternatives like BlueSky. So, the search traffic for BlueSky reportedly spiked significantly during the outage.
Interestingly, this cyberattack comes right after protests at Tesla plants and stores. While there’s no confirmed connection, the timing has raised questions about whether the attack was politically or economically motivated.
At the time of writing, X’s technical teams are actively working to restore full service and mitigate the attack’s effects.
This is a developing story, and more details are expected to emerge in the coming hours.
