The controversy erupted when Union Home Minister Amit Shah, during his speech in the Rajya Sabha, criticized Congress leaders for turning Dr. BR Ambedkar’s name into a “fashion”. He remarked, “It has become a trend to repeat Ambedkar’s name over and over. If they had chanted God’s name as much, they would have attained heaven in seven lifetimes.”

““Abhi ek fashion ho gaya hai—Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar. Itna naam agar bhagwan ka lete to saat janmon tak swarg mil jata”

Shah went on to accuse Congress of using Ambedkar’s legacy for political gain, stating that while the BJP honors Ambedkar’s contributions, the Congress needs to show true commitment beyond just words.

Uproar in Parliament

This sparked a political storm, leading to protests from various opposition parties, including Congress, Trinamool Congress (TMC), DMK, RJD, Left parties, and Shiv Sena-UBT, who criticized the BJP. The uproar caused multiple adjournments in both Houses of Parliament. Protests also spread to states like Maharashtra, Bihar, and Tamil Nadu, with Delhi seeing a demonstration led by AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal, where slogans like “Amit Shah maafi mango, Amit Shah sharm karo” (Amit Shah, apologize; Amit Shah, shame on you) were chanted outside BJP headquarters.

Congress reacts to Amit Shah

In response, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi sack Amit Shah if he refuses to step down, stating that if Modi truly respects Dr. Ambedkar’s legacy, he must take action.

Rahul Gandhi said, “Those who believe in Manusmriti will definitely have problems with Ambedkar ji.” The party alleged that Shah’s remarks during a debate on the Constitution show that the BJP and the RSS leaders have a “lot of hatred” for Ambedkar.

The Congress is also staging protests across the country at the Raj Bhavans of all states, including Chandigarh, Patna, Jammu, and Assam, against Amit Shah’s remark on BR Ambedkar and the Manipur and Adani issues.

PM Modi defends Amit Shah

Prime Minister Modi defended Amit Shah, accusing the Congress of hypocrisy and historical negligence toward Ambedkar’s contributions. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Modi stated, “If Congress and its ecosystem think they can hide their wrongdoings and insults toward Dr. Ambedkar, they are mistaken.” He also remarked, “The people of India have seen how one party, led by a dynasty, has used every tactic to undermine Dr. Ambedkar’s legacy and insult the SC/ST communities.”

The prime minister, in his post, further listed out Congress’ sins towards Dr Ambedkar. He wrote, “Getting him defeated in elections not once but twice. Pandit Nehru campaigning against him and making his loss a prestige issue. Denying him a Bharat Ratna. Denying his portrait a place of pride in Parliament’s Central Hall.”

Rahul says was pushed by BJP MPs, Kharge injured

A video surfaced showing BJP’s Nishikant Dubey accusing Rahul Gandhi of engaging in rowdy behavior (“gundagardi”). Gandhi responded by claiming, “He pushed me,” while walking away after briefly looking at Sarangi, who was being attended to by other BJP members. Gandhi told reporters outside Parliament, “I was trying to enter Parliament, and BJP MPs were stopping me, pushing me, and threatening me.”

Meanwhile, Congress alleged that BJP MPs were holding sticks and claimed that Mallikarjun Kharge, the leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha, was threatened and pushed. Kharge also wrote to Speaker Om Birla, stating that he was physically pushed by BJP MPs in the Parliament premises, which caused him to lose his balance. “I was pushed by BJP MPs, lost my balance, and was forced to sit down on the ground in front of Makar Dwar… This caused injuries to my knees, which have already undergone surgery,” Kharge said.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also dismissed the allegations against bother Rahul by terming it a conspiracy by BJP to protect Amit Shah.
