However, this is not the first instance of India extending help. When floods in Pakistan affected over 17 million people in 2010, claiming more than 1,600 lives, India had stepped in with significant assistance. Acting as a major support for the people of Pakistan, the Indian government provided $25 million (Rs 1125000000) in relief, including $20 million through the United Nations for rehabilitation and $5 million under the World Food Programme.
Hardeep Singh Puri, now a Union Minister, was India’s representative to the UN in 2010. He handed over a cheque of $20 million to Pakistan’s envoy Abdullah Hussain Haroon, in the presence of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, as part of India’s flood relief and rehabilitation aid. The aid, announced by the then Manmohan Singh government, positioned India as a crucial supporter in Pakistan’s time of crisis.
