New Delhi: Residents of Noida are likely to face a severe water shortage this festive season, as reports indicate that the city’s supply of 240 MLD (million liters per day) of Ganga water may be suspended for an entire month. Every year, Ganga water supply is disrupted during Diwali and other major festivals. Despite thousands of claims by the authority, many areas do not receive a proper supply.
To recall, last year, water supply in sectors 19, 22, 105, 12, and group housing projects was limited to just half an hour. Water supplied from borewells carries risks of skin diseases, stomach ailments, and dehydration, especially among children and the elderly.
Here are some of the few details:
- If there are issues with supply from borewells and renewal sources, over 1.2 million residents could be directly affected.
- With the Ganga water supply cut off, TDS levels in various areas are being recorded above 1000.
- It is worth noting that Noida’s total population of 2 million requires 407 MLD of Ganga water.
- The city receives 240 MLD from Siddharth Vihar and Pratap Vihar, which directly quenches the thirst of over 1.2 million people.
- Currently, the Ganga water supply is suspended.
- The authority claims to supply water through its 10 renewals and 300 tubewells.
- The old sectors 12 and 22 are already facing water issues.
- In areas where TDS levels remained normal with supply from the Ganga, readings are now crossing 1000.
- During Diwali and Chhath festivals, water demand will increase, which could put the authority under severe pressure.
- For many years, the cleaning of the Ganga canal during Diwali has dampened the festive spirit.
The cleaning of the Ganga canal is carried out by the Irrigation Department to remove silt. This work is done at a scheduled time. As an alternative arrangement, tubewells are available and water is being supplied through them. There will be no shortage of water in the city. [Substance] is being added to keep the TDS levels low,” R.P. Singh, GM (Water), Noida Authority.
