The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on Thursday presented its report on the controversial Waqf Amendment Bill, 2024, in Parliament. However, opposition members strongly protested, causing a temporary halt in the proceedings. Despite the disruption, the session resumed shortly after.
BJP leader Medha Vishram Kulkarni, a committee member, formally presented the report. The JPC, which traveled across the country to gather opinions before finalizing its recommendations, proposed 25 amendments across 14 clauses.
The report also includes objections from opposition members who were part of the committee. JPC Chairperson Jagdambika Pal explained that some members felt their views were ignored, so they were given the opportunity to submit dissenting notes, which have been attached to the report’s appendix. Additionally, records from stakeholder discussions were included.
