Sonam Raghuvanshi was arrested in a shocking case that began as a search for a missing couple and turned into a murder investigation. Sonam and her husband, Raja Raghuvanshi, had gone to Meghalaya for their honeymoon after recently getting married. The two were reported missing on May 23, but things took a dark turn when Raja’s body was discovered in a deep gorge on June 2.

Following this, the search for Sonam continued. About a week later, she appeared at a police station in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh. Her sudden return raised many questions. While speaking to NDTV, Uttar Pradesh Police’s Additional Director General (Law and Order), Amitabh Yash, shared new details about the case. He said Sonam claimed that she had been drugged and brought to Ghazipur against her will, in an attempt to show herself as a victim.

However, the police believe she made this up. According to ADG Yash, Sonam did not plan things well and did not understand how the police work. He said she tried to act innocent after allegedly killing her husband, but her story didn’t add up. “Sonam is a poor planner. She lacked knowledge of police procedures and thought she could escape by posing as a victim, but she failed,” he said.

“Sonam presented herself as a victim before the police, claiming she was drugged and brought to Ghazipur. She informed her family about this, knowing the police would eventually reach her. Around 3 am on Monday, she told her family that she was at a dhaba on the Ghazipur-Varanasi road. Her family immediately contacted the Madhya Pradesh police, who informed the local police, leading to Sonam’s arrest. She was sent for a medical checkup and then to a One-Stop Centre,” he told NDTV.

Police in Meghalaya, who are handling the investigation, believe that Sonam was having an affair outside her marriage. They say she planned her husband Raja Raghuvanshi’s murder with help from her boyfriend, Raj Kushwaha. Under growing pressure, Sonam surrendered on June 8. Both she and Raj have since been taken into custody.

Uttar Pradesh Police are not officially part of the investigation, which is being led by the Meghalaya Police. A senior officer from UP Police said that Sonam reached Ghazipur by herself. He also mentioned that CCTV videos and other proof are being closely studied, and more facts will come out soon.

Raj Kushwaha, who is accused of being Sonam’s boyfriend, is also under suspicion. Raja’s brother, Vipul Raghuvanshi, said that Raj used to work for Sonam and that the two of them often talked on the phone.

Raja and Sonam had just gotten married on May 11. They went on their honeymoon on May 20 and reached Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, the next day.
