Uttar Pradesh has executed its largest-ever crackdown on the illegal trade of cough syrups consisting of codeine. Officials say that there’s a special network which is functioning across several districts in the state and outside the state. The investigation was intensified after the government authorities made a special team to investigate the matter. The investigation is based on syrups being diverted, stored, and pushed into an illegal market. Over 128 such establishments, along with their owners, have been booked under the crackdown. The investigation by officials has led to the identification of over 10 suspects.

Who are the key suspects identified?

The Uttar Pradesh Police authorities are continuously investigating the matter along with the Food Safety and Drug Administration. Together they have identified more than 10 suspects. These identifications are expected to be functioning at multiple districts in the state, with well-established links outside the state. The evidence has also been collected until now, which targets a deeper conspiracy.

What action has been taken?

Uttar Pradesh authorities have registered FIRs against 128 suspected establishments, including operators. This action is being taken against the illegal pharmaceutical trafficking. A continuous investigation, comprising multiple raids, is still happening so that others involved in the racket can also be arrested. Specially allocated teams are examining the trails of finance and checking the interstate links.

SIT Investigation

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) is evaluating how the illegal racket was possibly established. It will also check the range of the network inside and outside the state. It’s also checking the storage points, supply routes, and transport patterns.
