Naheed Ejaz, the former Labour mayor of Bracknell in Berkshire, tried to stop police from doing their job and helped her son hide evidence linked to the rape of a 15-year-old girl by her 41-year-old son, Diwan Khan. The case is being heard at Winchester Crown Court of UK.
Prosecutors told the court that when police arrived at their shared home in the early hours of 12th September, 2024, Ms Ejaz did not immediately allow officers to enter. Instead, she is accused of delaying them for several minutes to open the door and was speaking to her son in Urdu, to help him hide a mobile phone containing a video of his sexual assault of a 15-year-old girl.

Attempt to hide crucial evidence
According to the prosecution, police had come to arrest Khan in connection with a rape complaint. Ed Wylde, prosecuting, said Ms Ejaz stood in the way of officers entering the house and used the time to assist her son in concealing his phone.
“That mobile phone was likely to have material that would be evidence in Mr Khan’s case,” Mr Wylde told the jury. He added that although Khan did hand over a phone to the police, it was not the device they were looking for.
The prosecution claims Ms Ejaz knew exactly what was happening. She is accused of helping her son keep the phone with the video hidden and of speaking in Urdu so that officers would not understand their conversation. Mr Wylde told the court that while it was unclear how much Ms Ejaz knew about the details of the case at that moment, her actions crossed the line into criminal behaviour.
“A mother’s love for her son will stretch some way,” he said, “and in this case it stretched into criminality.”
Details of the rape allegation
Khan is accused of raping a 15-year-old girl in June 2024 after giving her MDMA and vodka. Prosecutors say the girl blacked out and later woke up naked in the back seat of his car. It is alleged that Khan then showed her a video of himself having sex with her, choking her and slapping her face.
The court heard that Khan told the girl that she “belonged” to him and threatened to show the video to her mother if she spoke about what had happened. The girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, later told police that Khan also threatened to come to her house and slit her throat to stop her from telling anyone about the alleged rape.
Dispute over the girl’s age
In her police interview, the girl said she told Khan she was 15 years old. Khan, however, denied knowing her real age. He told police that he met her on the dating app Plenty of Fish and believed she was 24.
Prosecutors said the girl’s dating profile claimed she was 19, even though she was actually 15 at the time. Mr Wylde described her as troubled and rebellious, saying she drank alcohol, took drugs and sometimes sneaked out at night. He argued that these vulnerabilities were the reason Khan targeted her, believing she would not be taken seriously.
Denials and guilty plea
Khan has pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice by hiding the serious evidence and a mobile phone from police. However, he denies the charge of rape. Ms Ejaz, who served as mayor from 2023 to 2024 and often appeared alongside her son at official events, has denied perverting the course of justice.
The trial is continuing, with the court now tasked with deciding whether a former Labour figure abused her position as a mother to block police access and help her son cover up alleged crimes against a minor.
