Among the regional parties, the TDP received over Rs 100 crore in donations for 2023-24, while the Samajwadi Party received Rs 46.7 lakh in contributions, down from Rs 33 crore the previous year. In 2023-24, the YSR Congress, the DMK, and the JMM received donations of Rs 121.5 crore, Rs 60 crore, and Rs 11.5 crore, respectively.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has divulged the data of political donations submitted by the political parties. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) received donations of Rs 20,000 and above from individuals, trusts and corporate establishments which is six times higher in comparison to political donations of Indian National Congress.
According to ECI report, the political parties submitted their donation records under the sub-section (3) of Section 29C of the Representation of People Act, 1951. The BJP received around Rs 2,244 crore in 2023-24 while the grand old party received Rs 288.9 crore as donations for the same period.
The last year’s figures were Rs 742 crore for BJP while Congress saw Rs 79.9 crores as donations in their treasury.
As per the report published on the ECI’s website, the top donor, the Prudent Electoral Trust, contributed Rs 723.6 crore to the BJP and Rs 156.4 crore to the Congress during 2023-24.
During 2022-23, Along with the Prudent Electoral Trust, Megha Engineering & Infrastructure Ltd, Serum Institute of India, ArcelorMittal Group, and Bharti Airtel had also donated funds to the political parties.
The second-highest donor to the BJP was The Triumph Electoral Trust which donated Rs 127. 5 crore during the period. ACME Solar Energy Pvt Limited had donated a sum of Rs 51 crore while Dineshchandra R Agrawal Infracon Pvt Ltd, Derive Investments, Rungta Sons Pvt Ltd and Bharat Biotech International Ltd each contributed Rs 50 crore to the party fund.
Among individuals, Pankaj Singh, Ramesh Kunhikannan and Sunil Vachani contributed to the BJP Rs 15 crore, Rs 12 crore and Rs 10 crore respectively.
The Prudent Electoral Trust was the top donor for the Congress. The other who contributed for the grand old party from Telangana are-P Sudhanthi Reddy (Rs 2 crore), Jaya Chandra Reddy P (Rs 3 crore), Parupati Mahendas Reddy (Rs 3 crore), P Sujith Reddy (Rs 5 crore), P Sreenivas Reddy (Rs 5 crore), P Pushpleela Reddy (Rs 3 crore), P Charanraj Reddy (Rs 3 crore).
