Thane: The Thane Municipal Corporation chief, Saurabh Rao, directed officials to increase green shed cover and provide temporary water facilities to citizens during heat exposure.

TMC officials said that they received a positive response regarding the green shed cover and water facilities installed near major signals from the public. Commissioner Saurabh Rao directed the Public Works Department and the Environment Department to increase the number of both facilities as per the requirements.

According to the TMC officials, the initiative aims to provide relief to pedestrians and commuters, particularly at major traffic junctions where heat exposure is highest. The civic body said that TMC started temporary water pitcher facilities last year in wake of the extreme heat. So far, TMC has installed 25 water pitcher facilities with the help of an NGO, which has resulted in helping the labourers, wage earners, porters, and commuters.

According to the TMC, green shed covers have been set up at six major locations in Thane including Teen Haath Naka, Almeida Chowk, Khopat, and Nitin Company, to offer shade during long signal halts.

Rao has instructed that similar shelters be installed at all signals with wait times exceeding 60 seconds.Chief Rao reviewed the meeting with the officials regarding the state government’s 100-day program at TMC headquarters, including heatwave preparedness, cleanliness drives, and e-office systems.

Upon the arrival of the monsoon, Rao also reviewed monsoon preparations such as trimming dangerous tree branches, cleaning nullahs, and the pothole-free Thane campaign. Rao urged that the pothole areas be inspected and complaints be solved immediately. The pothole-related complaints were solved within 24 hours after receiving them.
