A 23-year-old medical student from Odisha was brutally gang-raped near her college campus in Durgapur on Friday night. She was assaulted while returning from dinner with a friend, when a group of men stopped them and chased her into a nearby forest. In her statement to the doctor, accessed by India Today, the survivor described how the attackers overpowered her. “They got out of their vehicle and started coming toward us. We ran into the forest, but they caught me, dragged me inside, and took away my phone. They told me to call my friend. When he didn’t come, they forced me to lie down,” she said. “When I screamed, they threatened to bring more men and said I should stay quiet.”

The horrifying assault took place in a forested area near the Paranaganj Kali Bari cremation ground, close to the college campus. Police have arrested five men so far. Among them, one is a former college security guard, another works at a hospital, one is employed temporarily with the local civic body, and one is unemployed.

West Bengal Police said all the accused would be taken to the crime scene for reconstruction of events as part of the investigation.

Friend of survivor taken to crime spot for reconstruction

Police investigating the Durgapur gang rape case took the arrested men and the survivor’s friend to the forest area near Paranaganj Kali Bari cremation ground on Tuesday to recreate what happened on the night of the crime. “The accused and the survivor’s friend have been brought to the site to reenact the incident. The entire process will be recorded on video and compared with their statements, as well as the victim’s version,” a police officer involved in the case told PTI.
