For a general background, schools around the country are expected to open after the festive vacation of Diwali and Chhath puja but due to the deep depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal, leading into Cyclone Montha. As a result of the intensification of the cyclone, certain states in southern India have declared holidays in select districts. School closures due to Cyclone Montha and Chhath Puja

Andhra PradeMontha cyclone schools update:

  • Schools in several districts of Andhra Pradesh will remain closed from October 27 to 29 due to heavy rain warnings linked to Cyclone Montha.
  • Due to the cyclone impact, holidays have been declared in East Godavari, Annamayya, Kadapa, NTR, Bapatla, Krishna, and Guntur districts.
  • Additional districts are likely to announce holidays as the situation develops.

Odisha schools update:

  • All schools, anganwadi centres, and colleges in Gajapati district of Odisha will remain closed until October 30 due the Montha cyclone threat.
  • Eight southern districts have been declared Red Zones.
  • Moreover, as a result of the cyclone, the authorities of Odisha have advised all 30 districts to stay on alert.

Bihar schools update:

  • The schools across Bihar will remain closed till October 29 owing to Chhath Puja, reopening only on October 30.

Jharkhand and Eastern Uttar Pradesh schools update:

The Chhath Puja festival is also celebrated in these regions, and schools are expected to remain closed. An official confirmation from the respective state governments is awaited.
