Thane: The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has recovered property taxes of Rs 810 crore in the fiscal year 2024-2025. However, the TMC had set a target to recover Rs 850 crore in the year. Nevertheless, it was short by Rs 40 crore against the target.

According to the civic officials, the special recovery drive has succeeded and marked with ninety-five percent recovery made. TMC Commissioner Saurabh Rao expressed gratitude to the citizens of Thane who paid their taxes and cooperated with the TMC.

The Tax Department of TMC officials said that they received a good response from the citizens through digital payment modes for paying their taxes. It is notable that property tax collection was Rs 702 crore in the year 2023-2024. TMC recovered Rs 108 crore more than last year’s tax collection.

The civic officials said that the tax is a significant source of revenue for the Thane Municipal Corporation and have launched several special drives to enhance tax collection. Property holders have paid their dues through the online link.

According to the TMC officials, there are several modes of payment of taxes such as cheque, money order, ATM-debit card, and credit card available at the collection center. However, the tax collection center has made it possible to pay taxes on holidays and public holidays.

Due to tax recovery, TMC appeals to the citizens to pay their taxes by announcing in the locality with the help of auto rickshaws. An official from the Tax Department of TMC said they issued notices to property holders who did not pay their taxes within the stipulated time. Despite having reminded them by serving notices, tax defaulters failed to do so. TMC started their legal action against them by sealing and attaching the properties.

GG Godepure, Deputy Commissioner of the Municipal Tax Department of TMC, said that Chief Saurabh Rao conducts tax collection reviews on a regular basis with all officials of the tax department. TMC officials said that approximately 88.48 percent of taxes have been received through online channels. The citizens showed enthusiasm for using online methods to pay taxes.
