Ramadan, one of the holiest months in the Islamic lunar calendar, is expected to commence from March 1, 2025, subject to the sighting of the crescent moon, which would mark the beginning of a month-long period of fasting, prayers, and spiritual reflection for billions of Muslims across the globe.

Unlike the more mainstream Gregorian calendar, the Islamic calendar is lunar-based, and each month begins with the sighting of the new crescent moon, thus Ramadan, akin to the rest of the Islamic months, falls on a different date each year. This year, the first day of Ramadan 2025 is expected to fall on March 1, and the Ramadan crescent moon is likely to be sighted in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on the evening of February 28, 2025, or 29 Sha’ban 1446 AH in the Islamic calendar.
While Saudi Arabia has a dedicated moon sighting committee tasked to observe the Ramadan moon days ahead of the expected date, the Kingdom encourages its Muslim citizens to sight the moon themselves using binoculars, or other similar devices.
The Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia has urged its citizens to observe the crescent moon on the evening of Friday, February 28, 2025, and notify the nearest court and record their testimony. However, if the Ramadan crescent is not sighted on Friday evening, the sacred month will begin Sunday, March 2, 2025.

Akin to Saudi Arabia, Ramadan 2025 is expected to begin in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on March 1, 2025, subject to the sighting of the crescent moon on the evening of February 28. As per Abu Dhabi-based International Astronomical Centre, the Ramadan moon can be viewed through telescopes in West Asia, parts of Africa, and southern Europe.
If the moon is sighted, Ramadan 2025 will begin from March 1, otherwise the holy month will commence on March 2, 2025.

Countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, Turkey, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and other Gulf states are likely to observe Ramadan 2025 from March 1, while Muslims in western nations like the United States and the United Kingdom, either rely on local moon sightings of follow Saudi Arabia, which could mark the start date of Ramadan on March 1 or March 2, 2025.
