After keeping prices steady since its 2019 launch, Spotify has finally raised the cost of all its Premium plans in India. The price hike is now official for new users, while existing subscribers will start getting email alerts soon.

The Individual plan has gone from ₹119 to ₹139. The Duo plan now costs ₹179 instead of ₹149. Families will feel the pinch the most, with the Family plan rising from ₹179 to ₹229. Even students, who used to enjoy a sweet ₹59/month, now have to pay ₹69.

Spotify says this is part of a global price update. In other words, India is not alone. Price increases are rolling out across the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Latin America, and more. But for Indian users, this is the first hike since Spotify’s debut.

The decision to revise prices was taken due to widening losses. Rising operational costs is the primary reason for losses. In Q2 2025, the company reported strong revenue growth but still ended up with a net loss of €86 million.

It is important to note that Spotify now has fewer competitors. Airtel shut down Wynk Music in 2024. Resso pulled out earlier this year. Gaana was sold off in late 2023. Now, Spotify is only competing with YouTube Music, Apple Music, Amazon Music, JioSaavn, and Hungama. But its primary competitor in the country is YouTube Music.

If you have been using Spotify for a long time in India, you already know how the company quietly started locking key features behind a paywall in its free plan. It was a clear move to push users towards paid subscriptions.
