New Delhi: The continuously increasing pollution in Delhi-NCR has raised concerns from the Supreme Court to the common man. Discussions on pollution, safety, and rising costs are not new, but a recent post on Reddit has brought these issues to the forefront in a way that has made it difficult for many to ignore. Titled ‘Delhi-NCR is ruined, there’s no point in defending it anymore’, this post has gone viral on social media. Instead of making any claims, it shares a personal assessment of life in the region, comparing it to experiences in other Indian cities.

No One Is Taking Responsibility

Referring to AQI levels exceeding 700 in some parts of Delhi-NCR, the Reddit user said that the real crisis is how normalized the situation has become. They wrote, “Leaders sit in cabins equipped with air purifiers and say, ‘This year the pollution is comparatively less.’ Soon, the number of deaths due to air pollution will far exceed the number of deaths from other causes, but no politician is willing to take responsibility.”

These Conditions Have Been Prevailing For Many Years

According to a report by Navbharat Times, the Respiratory Department of Delhi AIIMS recently held a press conference and stated that the polluted air has reached the severe zone. Dr. Anant said that these conditions have been prevailing for 10 years. The issue is discussed every time, but only for three months during the winter, and then everyone falls silent. Meanwhile, a former AIIMS doctor, Gopi Chand Khilnani, advised in an interview with the Indian Express that those who can leave Delhi for another city in late December or mid-December should do so for some time.

Increased Risk Of Heart Attack, Possibility Of Brain Stroke

He said that very small and fine particles of pollution (PM2.5) enter the body through the nose and reach the blood, from where they spread throughout the body. This increases the risk of heart attack, raises blood pressure, increases the likelihood of stroke (brain attack), causes blood vessels to thicken and become blocked, and also increases the risk of cancer. Several foreign institutions have claimed that pollution is reducing life expectancy in Delhi.

On this question, AIIMS doctors said that these are all estimates based on ‘modeling studies’ and not directly verified data. However, prolonged exposure to pollution will certainly increase diseases and affect life expectancy.
