The passengers were getting off the Chopan Express at platform four and were hit by the approaching Netaji Express, Amit Singh, Public Relations Officer, NCR Prayagraj Division, said.
At least six passengers were killed on Wednesday after being hit by a train at Chunar Railway Station in Mirzapur district, Uttar Pradesh, officials said. The accident took place at 9:30 am when passengers were getting off the Chopan Express on platform number four. As they got down, they were run over by the approaching Netaji Express, which was passing through the main line, said Amit Singh, Public Relations Officer of the North Central Railway (NCR) Prayagraj Division.
According to Indian Railways, the passengers got down on the wrong side of the train instead of using the Foot Over Bridge (FOB). “Train number 13309 (Chopan–Prayagraj Express) had arrived at platform four. Some passengers got down on the wrong side and started crossing the main track. At the same time, Train number 12311 (Netaji Express) came from the main line and ran over 3–4 passengers,” the statement said.
The deceased had come here for Kartik Purnima Snan. The deceased were identified as Savita, 28, Sadhna, 16, Shiv Kumari, 12, Anju Devi, 20, Sushila Devi, 60, and Kalawati, 50.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and offered his condolences to the families of the victims. He has directed officials to reach the site immediately and ensure that relief and rescue operations are carried out quickly.
The Chief Minister also ordered that SDRF and NDRF teams be sent to assist in the rescue work and instructed officials to provide proper medical care to the injured.
Railway authorities have urged passengers to always use designated foot over bridges or subways to cross tracks and avoid taking dangerous shortcuts that could lead to accidents.
