Jhabua (Madhya Pradesh): Cyber police are alerting residents about ongoing phone and message scams targeting the community. Residents are increasingly falling victim to scams orchestrated by anonymous callers and fraudulent messages that lure individuals into sharing personal and financial information.

Victims often receive calls from unknown numbers, with scammers posing as bank representatives. They request sensitive information such as bank account numbers, IFSC codes, ATM card details and OTPs. Once this confidential information is disclosed, fraudsters swiftly withdraw money from the victims’ accounts.

Scammers also utilize social media platforms, sending enticing messages that promise significant monetary gains in exchange for personal information. In a recent incident, a group of young individuals operated a fake bank from a private residence on Rangpura Road, near Meghnagar Naka.

By distributing recruitment pamphlets, they convinced people to pay Rs 1,550 for promised loans ranging from Rs 80,000 to 90,000. However, after collecting the fees, the scammers disappeared overnight, leaving many residents from Jhabua, Thandla and Alirajpur’s Jobat in distress. A case was registered and two suspects were arrested.

To combat the rise of cybercrime, police emphasise the importance of vigilance among citizens. Victims are encouraged to avoid engaging with links provided via phone calls or messages and to remain skeptical of unsolicited offers.

The police department, along with cyber police, was actively conducting awareness campaigns. These initiatives include various camps and programmes aimed at educating the public about the dangers of cyber fraud and providing strategies for protection.
