Passengers can now cancel their PRS counter tickets online via the IRCTC website or by calling 139, within the specified time limit as per the Railway Passengers (Cancellation of Tickets and Refund of Fares) Rules, 2015.
New Delhi: In a significant strategic move aimed at providing major relief to rail passengers, Indian Railways has enabled travellers to cancel their counter tickets online. This initiative will not only shorten queues at Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters but also simplify train travel. According to the latest updates, the rail passenger can book their train tickets in two formats—online and offline. For Online train ticket booking, the passenger needs to have a User Id on IRCTC website or mobile app.
For offline mode, the passenger needs to visit the railway station and purchase the ticket from dedicated counters. It is important to note that the PRS counters remain open from 8 AM to 8 PM every day except weekends. However, the working hours vary from place to place.
Notably, the IRCTC ticket or online train tickets are costlier than the counter tickets since it incurs substantial expenditure on providing online ticketing facilities, and in order to defray the cost incurred in maintenance, upgradation, and expansion of ticketing infrastructure, a convenience fee is levied by IRCTC.
Here are steps via which passengers can online cancel waitlisted counter tickets:
- Passenger needs to visit the official website of IRCTC at https://www.irctc.co.in/nget/train-search and log in.
- Enter PNR Number, Train number along with Captcha.
- Select the check box to confirm that the rules and procedures have been read.
- After clicking on submit, an OTP will be sent to the mobile number given at the time of booking. Enter the received OTP and click submit.
- After the OTP is validated, PNR details will be displayed on the screen.
- After verifying the details Click on ‘Cancel Ticket’ for full cancellation. Refund amount due will be displayed on the screen.
- An SMS will be sent with PNR and refund details.
It is important to note that the Waitlisted PRS counter ticket shall be cancelled across the reservation counter on surrendering of the original PRS counter ticket as per the time limit prescribed in the Railway Passengers (Cancellation of Tickets and Refund of Fares) Rules 2015.
Passengers can now cancel their PRS counter tickets online via the IRCTC website or by calling 139, within the specified time limit as per the Railway Passengers (Cancellation of Tickets and Refund of Fares) Rules, 2015.
