Mumbai: The People’s Voice group has urged Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah to take strictest possible action against all those who publicly assaulted a woman Shabina Banu in Davengere recently outside a mosque. The group’s convenor Yezdi Motiwala noted that the April 9 horrific incident has sent shockwaves across the nation.

“It is deeply disturbing to know that a woman was summoned to a religious place over a personal domestic dispute and was subjected to public humiliation and violence. The mob’s use of whips, pipes, sticks, and knives, and the audacity to film such an attack, is not only inhuman but also illegal and unconstitutional. The attempt to strip her is especially shameful and violates the dignity of a woman guaranteed under Article 21 of the Indian Constitution,” Motiwala added.

“This act is a direct challenge to law and order, and if such perpetrators are not dealt with sternly, it sets a dangerous precedent. We, the citizens of this country, urge your immediate intervention to ensure the following,” he added. He also wanted a probe into the role of the mosque committee in the incident and provision of security, financial and legal help to the victim.
