The Islamic State (ISIS) has claimed responsibility for the suicide bombing at Shia mosque in Islamabad, Pakistan on Friday, 6th February. The deadly blast reportedly killed at least 69 people and injured more than 170 others, according to media reports. The police reached the site of the attack immediately after receiving information about the explosion, and a state of emergency was declared in hospitals across Islamabad for the treatment of the injured.

“Upon reaching the inner gate of the temple, the martyrdom-seeker detonated his explosive vest amidst the Shi’a congregation, inflicting a large number of deaths and injuries,” IS said, according to the organisation, which monitors jihadist groups.
According to ABN News, the attacker tried to enter the mosque but was stopped at the entrance. It was at that point that he detonated the explosives, causing heavy casualties when the mosque was packed with worshippers due to Friday prayers.

The attack marked the most deadly strike in the Pakistani capital since September 2008, when 60 people died when a suicide truck bomb struck the city, destroying part of the five-star Marriott Hotel.
