Captain Shashi Kiran, Chief Public Relations Officer of North Western Railway, said that this rule has been implemented to ensure the convenience of passengers with confirmed tickets, so they do not face discomfort during their journey due to waiting ticket holders.

New Delhi: Indian Railways has always been the backbone of India’s economy and connectivity, serving as a crucial lifeline for the nation. It facilitates the movement of people and goods across vast distances, playing a significant role in trade, commerce, and industrialization. The Indian Railways serves lakhs of people on a daily basis. Recently, the sector has announced a few changes which are likely to affect crores of passngers. Starting May 1, stricter rules will be implemented to improve the travel experience for those with confirmed tickets. Under the new rules, passengers holding waiting list tickets will not be allowed to travel in sleeper or AC coaches.

They will only be permitted to travel in general class. It is important to note that if an online ticket booked through IRCTC remains in the waiting list, it gets automatically cancelled. However, many passengers who purchase waiting list tickets from counters still travel in sleeper and AC coaches.

The Indian Railways has decided to prohibit passengers traveling in sleeper and AC coaches with a waiting list ticket from May 1. If a passenger with a waiting ticket is found occupying a seat in these coaches, the TTE will have the authority to either fine the individual or shift them to the general compartment.

Captain Shashi Kiran, Chief Public Relations Officer of North Western Railway, said that this rule has been implemented to ensure the convenience of passengers with confirmed tickets, so they do not face discomfort during their journey due to waiting ticket holders.

Passengers traveling on waiting list tickets often enter sleeper and AC coaches and try to occupy seats reserved for confirmed ticket holders, leading to conflicts and inconvenience. When large numbers of such passengers crowd into these coaches, the aisles become blocked, restricting movement and making the journey uncomfortable for everyone. As a result, if you frequently travel with a waiting ticket, it’s now more important than ever to plan ahead and travel responsibly.
