The train accident occurred near Sabira, close to the Soro railway station in Balasore district, when the New Jalpaiguri-Chennai Express hit an electric pole during track-laying work.

The New Jalpaiguri-Chennai Express derailed in Odisha Balasore district on Saturday after colliding with an electric pole. As per reports, the mishap occurred near Sabira, close to the Soro railway station in Balasore district, when the Chennai-bound express train, coming from Kolkata in West Bengal, hit an electric pole during during track-laying work, causing the battery to fall.

In a statement, South Eastern Railway (SER) Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) Om Prakash Charan said no reports of casualties or injuries have been received so far. The CPRO said there was an an issue with the locomotive, and the matter is being investigated.

The derailment left hundreds of passengers in the lurch as repairs were underway, IANS reported.

Second derailment in as many days

Notably, this is the second derailment in Odisha in as many days. On Friday night, three wagons of a goods train, en route to Raipur, were derailed at the Titilagarh yard. According to details, the incident took place at Titilagarh yard, near the railway station at around 8:30 pm on Friday.

No casualties have been reported from the incident so far, according to officials.

Officials from the East Coast Railways, along with the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of Sambalpur, arrived at the scene to investigate the situation and work on restoring the wagons.

“Red mud was loaded in these wagons and was being taken to a cement plant. Three wagons derailed while leaving from Line 8… The main line was immediately restored… All portions except three wagons of this goods train have been removed from the track…,” said Sambalpur DRM Tusharkanta Pandey.

According to the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) for Sambalpur Division, the Up line is clear, and the affected Down line will be cleared as soon as possible.

Staff and officials deployed from the Accident Relief Train have begun work to clear the obstructed rail tracks.

The goods train operates from Chikiti, near Rayagada Railway, to Raipur Railway Station, passing through Titilagarh Railway Junction.
