The New Delhi Railway Station has received a significant infrastructure boost with the inauguration of a modern Passenger Facility Centre, just days before Diwali. The new facility aims to improve crowd management, ease congestion, and enhance passenger comfort during the festive rush. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited the station to inspect the new centre and review arrangements for passenger movement and crowd control. She also interacted with travellers to gather feedback and ensure the new amenities meet public expectations.
Improved crowd management and ticketing system
The upgraded station area has been divided into three separate ticketing zones to better manage the expected surge of passengers. Railway officials said the reorganisation will help decongest platforms and reduce overcrowding.
The move follows a tragic stampede earlier this year that claimed 18 lives due to overcrowding at the station. Authorities said the new facility and improved layout will play a key role in preventing such incidents and ensuring a safer, smoother travel experience for passengers.
Delhi CM Rekha Gupta launches new passenger centre at NDLS
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the new facility marks a proactive step toward making festive travel safer and more comfortable.

“During the festive season, Delhi’s railway stations see a massive rush as people travel to their hometowns for Diwali and Chhath Puja. In the past, we have witnessed unfortunate incidents due to overcrowding. I’m glad that such a large passenger convenience centre has been inaugurated to handle the rush effectively,” Gupta said.
She was accompanied by BJP MP Manoj Tiwari, who represents North-East Delhi. Tiwari said the initiative reflects the administration’s preparedness and lessons learned from previous mishaps.
“The government is alert and cautious this time. A large holding area has been created, and the country’s largest unreserved ticket counter has been set up to help passengers get their tickets easily and board trains without standing in long queues,” he said.
Additional trains for smooth festive travel
To further ease travel during the festive period, Chief Minister Gupta announced the introduction of around 3,000 additional trains, many of which will connect Delhi to Bihar and other parts of eastern India.
“This will ensure that our brothers and sisters from Purvanchal can reach their homes safely and celebrate the festivals with joy,” she said, adding that the move is part of the government’s broader effort to ensure safe, efficient, and inclusive travel for all.
