Mumbai: In a significant strategic move, Indian Railways is considering launching a new Vande Bharat train service from Mumbai to Mangaluru, merging the existing Mumbai-Goa and Mangaluru-Goa routes. Currently, both trains operate with an average passenger occupancy of about 70 percent. The main motive behind introducing new service is to improve efficiency and increase passenger numbers, allowing travellers to reach Mangaluru from Mumbai in approximately 12 hours.

It is important to note that the Mangaluru-Goa Vande Bharat is one of the least occupied routes. The passenger occupancy of the train is below 40 percent. To recall, the Railways had initially proposed extending the service to Kozhikode. However, this plan was abandoned due to opposition from political leaders in Karnataka. Currently, the Mangaluru-Goa Vande Bharat completes its journey in about four and a half hours.

Initially, the Mumbai-Goa Vande Bharat had a high occupancy rate of around 90%, but it has now dropped to approximately 70%. The railways believe that combining the Mumbai-Goa and Mangaluru-Goa services into a single Mumbai-Mangaluru route will help maximize passenger capacity.

Here are some of the key details:

  • Mangaluru-Goa Vande Bharat is one of the least-occupied routes. The passenger occupancy of the train is below 40 percent.
  • Mumbai-Goa Vande Bharat had a high occupancy rate of around 90%, but it has now dropped to approximately 70 percent
  • Trains running between Mumbai and Mangaluru, as well as those extending to Kerala, consistently have 100 percent passenger occupancy.
  • The Mumbai-Goa Vande Bharat departs Mumbai at 5:25 am and arrives in Goa at 1:10 pm.
  • Under the proposed schedule, it would then continue to Mangaluru, reaching there by 6:00 pm.
  • Mangaluru-Goa Vande Bharat departs Mangaluru at 8:30 am, reaching Goa at 1:10 pm. If the train continues to Mumbai, it is expected to arrive by 9:00 pm.

However, congestion at Mumbai’s railway platforms during this period could be a challenge. With several long-distance trains arriving around 9:00 pm, Central Railways has suggested that adjustments to the Mumbai-Mangaluru Vande Bharat schedule might be required.
