Mumbai: Comedian Kunal Kamra has issued a clarification regarding the breach of privilege proceedings initiated against him by the Maharashtra Legislature, stating that he had not sought any adjournment from the Privileges Committee, contrary to media reports.

In a detailed statement, Kamra said he had been asked to appear before the Privileges Committee of the Maharashtra Legislative Council on February 5, 2026. According to him, the summons was issued through a letter dated January 23, but it was served to him only on January 29, leaving him with limited time to prepare.

Despite the short notice, Kamra stated that he had agreed to attend the hearing. He said he sent an email to the Committee on January 30 confirming that he would appear before it along with his lawyer.

He further mentioned that he flew to Mumbai on Wednesday specifically for the hearing. However, on the same evening at around 6 pm, he received a call from an officer at the Vidhan Sabha informing him that the hearing had been adjourned. He said this was later confirmed through an official letter from the Committee, which, according to him, clearly stated that the adjournment was not requested by him.

Kamra added that he had not been informed of the next hearing date, although some media reports suggested that it could take place on February 17, 2026.

In his statement, he emphasised that he remains willing to cooperate with the proceedings and said it was important to correct the public record regarding the adjournment.

He also raised concerns about confidentiality. Kamra said that all communication from the Committee had described the proceedings as “confidential.” Despite this, he claimed that notices sent to him appeared to have been leaked to the media, and that the Committee’s chairman had been making statements to the press about the developments.

Kamra said he had refrained from commenting earlier, but felt compelled to respond due to what he described as incorrect reporting about the events surrounding the hearing. He also made a remark questioning the Committee’s approach to its scheduled work.

Kamra was in the headlines in March of last year when his comments during a performance at Mumbai’s Habitat Studio became widely circulated on social media. He delivered a parody of ‘Bholi Si Surat,’ a famous song from the Bollywood film ‘Dil To Pagal Hai,’ in which he referred to Mr. Shinde as ‘gaddar’ (traitor). This term is significant as Shinde led the revolt that fractured the Shiv Sena and ousted Uddhav Thackeray’s government in 2022. Thackeray had frequently labeled Shinde a ‘gaddar’.

Outraged by Kamra’s comments, Shiv Sena party leaders vandalised the Habitat premises, where the comedian had performed the set. Following the attack, Habitat Studio announced they were shutting down after Shiv Sena workers vandalised the premises.

FIR were also lodged against him. The comedian sought the quashing of FIR against him on the basis of the fundamental right of freedom of expression and right to life under articles 19 and 21 of the Indian constitution.
