Located in Rajasthan’s Bharatpur, Lohagarh Fort is completely made of mud and lime, but even so, its walls were so strong that cannonballs could not damage them. When enemies fired cannonballs, they would get stuck in the walls and become ineffective. From there, the fort gained its name ‘Lohagarh,’ i.e., ‘strong like iron.’

Maharaj Surajmal Had Built It
The Lohagarh fort was built on 19 February 1733 by the Jat ruler of Bharatpur – Maharaja Surajmal. The king was known for his war strategy and diplomacy, and because of him the fort became invincible. Maharaja Surajmal’s had a very small army, but he was so skilled in strategy that no enemy could conquer this fort.
Defeat Of The Mughals
The Mughal emperors made several attempts to seize this fort, but each effort was unsuccessful. Despite having a large army and formidable cannons, they were unable to breach the fort’s defenses. The fort continued to pose a significant challenge to the Mughals.
Marathas Also Defeated
The Maratha warriors aspired to capture this fort, yet they were ultimately unsuccessful. Despite launching an attack, they had to concede defeat due to the fort’s strong defenses and the courage displayed by the Jat soldiers.
Britishers Also Had To Face Defeat
In 1805, Britishers attacked the fort to capture it. They fired shells continuously for about 6 weeks, but the fort did not budge. In the end, the British had to accept defeat and compromise.
Played A Role In The Freedom Struggle
Lohagarh Fort played a significant role during the 1857 freedom struggle. It served as a refuge for revolutionaries opposing British rule and aided in the organization of the rebels. The fort stands as an important testament to the fight for independence.
