Following India’s recent cricket victory in the Asia Cup final, tensions have flared once again, but this time off the field. In a controversial response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s congratulatory message on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Mohsin Naqvi posted a statement that sparked outrage.
Naqvi, while sharing PM Modi’s tweet, wrote, “If war was your measure of pride, history already records your humiliating defeats at Pakistan’s hands. No cricket match can rewrite that truth. Dragging war into sport only exposes desperation and disgraces the very spirit of the game,” .
Mohsin Naqvi’s stance against India
The post-match presentation ceremony was delayed, and when the Pakistani players finally arrived to collect their awards, they tossed their prize cheques aside in a gesture widely condemned as disrespectful. Earlier, the Indian team had reportedly refused to accept the trophy from Naqvi, a move seen as a protest against his behavior.
Adding to the strained atmosphere, Indian players avoided handshakes with their Pakistani counterparts throughout the tournament and skipped the usual pre-toss photoshoot, making their stance clear. Naqvi, meanwhile, continued to stoke controversy by calling on the ICC to take action against Suryakumar Yadav, who had expressed support for the Indian Army in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack.
