New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday registered a massive victory in the Delhi Assembly elections, with top senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders facing an embarrassing defeat. Former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal faced a humiliating defeat in the New Delhi Assembly seat. The saffron party is poised to form a government in Delhi after 26 years, with the latest Election Commission (EC) trends showing the BJP ahead in a further 43 of Delhi’s 70 seats and AAP in 16.
Former deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia has conceded defeat to the BJP’s Tarvinder Singh Marwah in Jangpura while the saffron party’s Parvesh Verma claimed to have defeated AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal in the high-profile New Delhi seat. Verma — the son of former chief minister Sahib Singh Verma — told reporters that the credit for his “victory” belonged to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the people of Delhi.
Now that the BJP is set to win the Delhi Assembly polls, all eyes are on the Chief Ministerial face. With Parvesh Verma’s name running as the top contender for the post, Mohan Singh Bisht is also considered to be one of the front runners. Considered to be one of the BJP most experienced leaders, Mohan Singh Bisht was fielded from the Muslim-dominated seat of Mustafabad.
Who is Mohan Singh Bisht?
- Bisht is the sitting Karawal Nagar MLA and was replaced there by Kapil Mishra
- Bisht is one of the veteran BJP leaders in Delhi’s political arena
- He was first elected as an MLA in 1998 from Karawal Nagar, a seat he retained till 2015.
- He lost the seat to Mishra in 2015, then fighting on an AAP ticket.
- Five years later, Bisht wrested Karawal Nagar back, defeating the AAP’s Durgesh Pathak.
- After being replaced by Mishra, Bisht had termed the BJP’s decision as a “big mistake” even as internal surveys of the BJP suggested that voters of Karawal Nagar preferred Mishra’s firebrand Hindutva-cum-Purvanchali face.
- With Bisht sulking, the BJP national leadership intervened and a day later, announced him as the candidate from Mustafabad keeping in mind the significant Pahadi population.
