The sanitation department attached to the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) has collected fines amounting more than Rs.79.92 lakhs from litter mongers and those found to be using banned single use plastic (SUP) material in the past 10 months between 1, April 2024 to 31, January, 2025. The offenders include those found spitting, urinating, defecating and littering in public places and street-side shops, eateries and establishments like upscale shopping malls who were caught giving goods to customers in SUP material.
Additionally, fines amounting 40, 000 were slapped and offences registered against ten dumper owners for illegally disposing off construction debris in public spaces and restricted areas. While the civic administration has 100 sanitary supervisors (mukadam) have been deputed to keep an eye on the litter mongers and SUP users who slap instant fines during their routine cleanliness duty, four anti-debris and flying squads have been deployed to check suspected vehicles loaded with construction waste.

The squad claims to have checked 426 vehicles in the past couple of months. Developers also come under the ambit of a penalty amounting Rs.5,000 for spilling construction material on the roads during transportation in trucks and dumpers. While the civic administration imposes a fine of Rs.100 for spitting, urinating, defecating and littering garbage in public places, garage and furniture shop owners are fined Rs.500 and Rs.300 respectively for not maintaining cleanliness in their surroundings and improper waste disposal. Burning garbage in public places and selling banned plastic items also invite a similar action.

Apart from ten tonnes of industrial and bio medical waste, the MBMC which is saddled with a daunting task of disposing of around 500 metric tonnes of garbage generated by 12.64 lakh odd populace of twin-city in 24 wards spread across an area of 79.4 sq.km on a daily basis, has hired a Gujarat-based company which processes 225 to 250 TPD (tonnes per day) into compost and 150-175 into refuse-derived fuel (RDF).
