At least 10 people were killed following a massive shooting in the rural area of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, in Canada, as confirmed by the Canadian police on 10th February (local time). The dead also include the person who is suspected of having carried out the shooting. As per reports, around six people were found dead inside Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, one died on the way to the hospital, and two were found dead inside a residence.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) first received the information about an active shooter at the Tumbler Ridge Secondary School at approximately 1:20 pm local time on Tuesday. A team of police immediately entered the school to locate the shooter. “During the search, officers located multiple victims. An individual believed to be the shooter was also found deceased with what appears to be a self‑inflicted injury,” the RCMP said in a statement on Tuesday. The police found around 25 other people who sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were treated at a local clinic.

“All remaining students and staff were safely evacuated. Police are working closely with the school district to support a coordinated reunification process for families,” the RCMP said.

Superintendent Ken Floyd, Commander of the RCMP’s North District, extended sympathies for the victims of the shooting. “The swift cooperation from the school, first responders, and the community played a critical role in our response,” Floyd said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with the families, loved ones and all those impacted by this tragic incident. This has been an incredibly difficult and emotional day for our community,” he added.

Canadian PM Carney condemns the incident

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney condemned the incident and offered condolences to the families of the victims. “I am devastated by today’s horrific shootings in Tumbler Ridge, B.C. My prayers and deepest condolences are with the families and friends who have lost loved ones to these horrific acts of violence. I join Canadians in grieving with those whose lives have been changed irreversibly today, and in gratitude for the courage and selflessness of the first responders who risked their lives to protect their fellow citizens…” Carney posted on X on Wednesday (11th February).

“Our officials are in close contact with their counterparts to ensure the community is fully supported as best we can. The Government of Canada stands with all British Columbians as they confront this horrible tragedy,” Carney added.

The Canadian authorities have launched an investigation into the incident to ascertain the motive of the attacker.
