The accused, Diganth, clicked photos and videos of unsuspecting women on the Bengaluru metro network, and later shared them on the Instagram page, Bangalore Metro Clicks (@metro_chicks), which had over 6,000 followers.
A 27-year-old man who clicked pictures and videos of unsuspecting women commuters on the Bengaluru metro, and shared these on an Instagram page called ‘Bangalore Metro Clicks’ (@metro_chicks), was arrested Friday and booked under relevant sections of the IT Act, 2000, the police said.
As per the police, the accused, Diganth, who works in the accounts department of a private firm, was arrested from his house in the Tigalarpalya area, after the Instagram handle that shared non-consensual pictures of women, was traced to him.
“A case was registered in this regard at Banashankari police station on May 20, and an investigation was launched. The accused is a 27-year-old man who works in the accounts department of a private firm. He is a resident of Tigalarpalya and works in Murugeshpalya,” Lokesh B Jagalasar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South), told news agency PTI.
The officer revealed that the accused, while traveling to and from work, used to click pictures and videos of women without their knowledge or consent and upload the videos on the Instagram page. “The person has been arrested and will face further legal action,” he added.
According to the police, the matter came to light on May 20 when they were reviewing social media platforms for suspicious posts as part of a routine probe. “During this review, a police officer came across the Instagram account, which contained 14 unsolicited videos and pictures allegedly taken inside metro coaches and on station premises,” they said, adding that none of the women appeared to be aware that someone was filming them.
The Instagram account, Bangalore Metro Clicks (@metro_chicks), which had over 6,000 followers, has been taken down, and all pictures and videos deleted, the police said.
