Kurla Elevated Line Project faces further delays; new completion deadline set for December 2025 | File Photo

Mumbai: Nearly nine years after the contract was awarded, the Kurla elevated line project is still far from completion. Initially, the project was expected to be finished within three years of the work order being issued in 2016. However, due to multiple delays, the deadline has now been extended to December 2025, as revealed by an RTI query.

RTI activist Anil Galgali sought information from the Central Railway (CR) regarding the Kurla elevated line project. According to the details provided by Rohit Mehta, Deputy Chief Engineer (CR), the project was awarded to contractor M/s Walecha RE Infra (JV) in January 2016. The total contract value is Rs 89.26 crore, of which Rs 62.65 crore has already been paid to the contractor. Due to multiple delays, the project is now expected to be completed by December 31, 2025.

The CR has cited various site-related issues as the cause for the delay in the Kurla elevated line project. The Kurla elevated route includes an elevated platform with three Customer Operation Points (COPs).

The station features a mezzanine floor that houses a booking office and other essential facilities. Additionally, there is a skywalk that connects all the Foot Over Bridges (FOBs) to the new station building, which is equipped with modern amenities such as escalators and lifts.

Despite the delays, the CR administration has not imposed any penalty on the contractor for the setback. Galgali has written a letter to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav and the General Manager of CR, raising concerns about the delays in the Kurla elevated line project and the absence of any penalties on the contractor.

He highlighted that the ongoing delays are worsening the difficulties faced by passengers due to the lack of essential public facilities. Galgali further expressed that if the project is not completed within the stipulated timeline, there is a risk of an increase in costs.
