The Kharghar Wetlands and Hills, in collaboration with environmentalists and local authorities, will conduct a biodiversity survey on February 1, 2025, ahead of World Wetlands Day, which is observed globally on February 2. The theme for this year, “Protecting Wetlands for Our Common Future,” aims to raise awareness about the vital role wetlands play in ecological balance and biodiversity conservation.
“Wetlands, whether natural or man-made, freshwater or coastal, seasonal or permanent, serve as critical ecosystems that support a variety of plant and animal species. They act as natural sponges, absorbing excess monsoon water to prevent flooding while replenishing groundwater levels to mitigate drought conditions,” said the Jyoti Nadkarni, member of the Kharghar wetlands and Hill.
Environmentalists Naresh Chandra Singh and Nadkarni, were part of the Raigad District Wetland Documentation Committee, which was appointed by the District Collector to officially document and protect wetlands across the district. These wetlands are now legally recognized, and any reclamation or dumping activities have been prohibited. A recent Supreme Court ruling on December 11, 2024, has further mandated the demarcation and protection of all wetlands within the next three months.
“The biodiversity survey aims to highlight the rich flora and fauna thriving in these urban wetlands, emphasizing the need for their long-term preservation,” informed Nadkarni. Last year, World Wetlands Day was marked with a cleanup drive at Sector 35 Wetland, and a similar drive will be conducted this year in collaboration with the Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) in the coming week.
With urbanization rapidly expanding, environmentalists stress that wetland conservation is crucial not only for sustaining wildlife but also for ensuring long-term ecological stability for future generations.
