The incident took place on Monday in Chandni Chowk, where an employee of a trading firm was robbed at gunpoint.
Delhi Police successfully solved a robbery case with the help of Israeli facial recognition technology, arresting two suspects and recovering almost the entire stolen amount of Rs. 80 lakh, officials reported on Wednesday. The arrested individuals were identified as 21-year-old Md Ali and 19-year-old Samir.
The incident took place on Monday in Chandni Chowk, where an employee of a trading firm was robbed at gunpoint. The suspects fired a shot in the air to scare bystanders before fleeing with the cash.
To track down the culprits, police reviewed footage from around 500 CCTV cameras installed in areas such as Chandni Chowk, Red Fort, Jama Masjid, Daryaganj, and Lahori Gate.
Facial recognition identifies the suspect
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Raja Banthia, Israeli facial recognition technology helped identify Md Ali by linking him to a previous crime.
On March 17, Ajmal Bhai Ganesh (49), an employee of R K Enterprises and a resident of Patan, Gujarat, collected Rs. 80 lakh from Kucha Ghasiram around 7 pm. As he made his way home towards Fatehpuri, he was stopped by an armed man. When Ganesh resisted the robbery attempt, the man fired a warning shot, snatched the bag, and fled.
During the investigation, police identified one of the suspects wearing a blue shirt and a cap, following the victim and later escaping towards Fatehpuri Masjid. Another suspect fled towards Lal Qila on a Scooty.
Arrest and recovery
Ali, a resident of Daryaganj, was later arrested. During interrogation, he revealed the name of his accomplice, Samir, who was also arrested from Daryaganj.
A raid at Samir’s house led to the recovery of Rs. 79.5 lakh in cash, along with a semi-automatic pistol loaded with three bullets and other evidence.
Investigations revealed that Ali was familiar with the cash collection process in Kucha Ghasiram and had surveyed the area before the robbery. While Ali identified the target, Samir carried out the armed robbery.
Both suspects have been charged under relevant legal sections, the DCP confirmed.
