Instagram has started testing a Picture-in-Picture (PiP) feature for Reels. The new option lets users watch Reels in a small floating window while using other apps.

The feature was first spotted by app researcher Radu Oncescu, who also shared screenshots on Threads. Instagram later confirmed the test and said some users will see a pop-up notification explaining how to enable it.

Picture-in-Picture could be useful for people who want to watch longer Reels without being stuck in the Instagram app. For example, someone can keep a Reel playing in the background while replying to messages or scrolling through another app.

Other platforms like YouTube and TikTok already support Picture-in-Picture. By adding it, Instagram could help creators hold on to their audiences longer and encourage people to spend more time watching content on its app.

For now, Instagram is testing the feature with a small group of users. The company has not confirmed when, or if, Picture-in-Picture will be available for everyone.
