The ICF in Chennai is leading the way in producing hydrogen trains, marking a major step in India’s move towards sustainable transportation.
In a major achievement, India is set to rollout Hydrogen train with the Ministry of Railways working in full swing for the unveiling of the country’s first hydrogen-powered train.
India’s first hydrogen train is being manufactured by Chennai-based Integral Coach Factory (ICF). The ICF in Chennai is leading the way in producing hydrogen trains, marking a major step in India’s move towards sustainable transportation. This initiative is being driven by the Ministry of Railways, which has set aside Rs. 2,800 crore.
The hydrogen fuel train set will provide larger benefits in the direction of green transportation technology to support zero carbon emission goals as a clean energy source. India has developed a hydrogen-powered train engine with the highest capacity in the world. While most countries have built hydrogen trains with capacities ranging from 500 to 600 horsepower (HP), India has achieved a breakthrough by creating an engine with a capacity of 1,200 horsepower (HP).
Scheduled to be launched in May, the 1,200-horsepower hydrogen-powered train is going to setting a global benchmark. This initiative, along with developments like the 9,000-horsepower locomotive, highlights India’s advancements in sustainable and high-power railway technology.
The first hydrogen train has been allocated to the Northern Railway’s Delhi Division. It is likely to run on the 89-km-long Jind-Sonipat section.
