The QS World University Rankings by Subject, 15th edition, has recognised 79 Indian institutions, reflecting the country’s increasing academic presence. However, nine of these institutions have achieved positions among the world’s top 50 in various subject areas.

Among the specific subject categories, the top Indian institution is the Indian School of Mines (ISM), Dhanbad. ISM has achieved the remarkable 20th ranking in the world in the area of Engineering – Mineral and Mining, a testament to the strength of the institution in this specialised discipline.

Among broad subject categories, two Indian prestigious institutions, IIT Delhi (Rank 26) and IIT Bombay (Rank 28), are the only institutions in this year’s QS rankings to find places among the top 50. Both institutions have been listed under the Engineering & Technology category, reinforcing India’s leadership in the sector.

Arts and Humanities

The University of Delhi, Jawaharlal Nehru University, and the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB) are among 10 Indian universities placed in the Arts and Humanities category. The trio has found a place among the top 200.

Engineering and Technology

India has a strong representation in the Engineering and Technology category, with 24 universities making the list. Five of them are ranked among the top 100.

Life Sciences and Medicine

A total of 6 Indian universities are featured in the Life Sciences and Medicine category, with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) leading the list at Rank 226.

Natural Sciences

19 universities from India are included in the Natural Sciences category. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) topped the list for India, securing Rank 109.

Social Sciences & Management

In the Social Sciences & Management category, 20 Indian universities made it to the rankings. The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IITD) is the top-ranked institution from India, with a position at Rank 75.
