As per the official data, the railways carried 1,617 million tonnes (MTs) of freight last year compared to 1,591 MT during 2023-24.

New Delhi: Indian Railways under the Modi government has witnessed a massive transformation. The authorities have implemented a slew of changes that have changed the face of the sector. From introducing new high-speed trains to upgrading railway stations, the railway sector has undergone significant transformations, enhancing comfort and convenience for travelers. As a result, the number of passengers opting for train travel has surged dramatically. In 2024-2025, Railways recorded the highest ever earnings of around Rs 2.7 lakh crore registering maximum revenue from both freight and passenger segments in its history.

Railway officials also said that the number of passengers who travelled by trains last year touched 735 crore, around 6% more than the previous year.

  • As per the official data, the railways carried 1,617 million tonnes (MTs) of freight last year compared to 1,591 MT during 2023-24.
  • The revenue from freight movement touched Rs 1.75 lakh crore compared to Rs 1.7 lakh crore during the previous year.
  • In the passenger segment, the earnings from fare was around Rs 75,500 crore compared to Rs 70,693 crore in FY24.
  • Railway achieved the maximum ever freight loading by running 44,408 more goods trains.
  • They added that railways has also added to its wagon fleets by adding 41,929 last year.

“The focus was on adding wagons for goods and coaches to meet growing passenger requirements. Out of the 7,133 coaches manufactured last year, 4,601 were non-AC and the remaining 2,533 were AC. This shows the govt’s commitment to make more trains and coaches available for low and middle class passengers,” said an official.

On railways remaining the most preferred mode of transport for bulk cargo, railway officials said this helps reduce overall logistics costs for businesses, making goods more competitive domestically and internationally. “Moreover, railways link the mines, factories, agricultural regions, and ports with markets across the country, enabling seamless supply chains across its vast nationwide network,” an official statement said.
