New Delhi: India is continuously working to strengthen its maritime power. In this regard, the government has taken a major step with the US, which will provide long-term support to the Navy’s Seahawk helicopter fleet. This deal is significant in many ways, be it technology, training, or the direction of a self-reliant India.

What did the US Department of State say?

The US Department of State posted on X: “Great news in our defense relationship with India. India’s Ministry of Defense signed a sustainment package for its 24 MH-60R Seahawk helicopters, developed by Lockheed Martin. This $946 million dollar package will enhance the Indian Navy’s maritime capabilities, build interoperability with the U.S. and regional partners, and makes both our nations safer and more prosperous.”

A major deal worth Rs 7,995 crore with the US

India has signed a Rs 7,995 crore agreement with the USA to ensure continued support for the Indian Navy’s fleet of 24 Seahawk helicopters for five years. Significantly, this contract was signed amid tensions in relations between the two countries following US President Donald Trump’s imposition of a 50% tariff on Indian goods.

What does the deal include?

The Ministry of Defence stated that it has signed a Letter of Offer and Acceptance for the MH60R helicopters. These helicopters are manufactured by Lockheed Martin Corporation and are easily operable in all weather conditions.

India already signed an agreement to purchase 24 MH60R helicopters in February 2020. This helicopter is a maritime version of the Blackhawk and is considered crucial for the Navy.

Benefits of in-domestic capability enhancement

According to the Ministry, this ongoing support package is substantial. It includes spare parts, accessories, product support, training, technical assistance, and repair services. The most important benefit will be the development of these facilities in India, reducing future dependence on the US, in line with the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.

The Ministry also stated that this deal will also benefit MSMEs and Indian companies, promoting indigenous products and services.

India received the first three MH60R helicopters in 2021, significantly enhancing its naval capabilities.
