Authorities have put Tamil Nadu and Bengaluru on high alert as Cyclone Ditwah moves toward the north Tamil Nadu coast. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 20 cm in 24 hours. Red alert has been issued for Delta and select north coastal districts. Ditwah is expected to make landfall on Sunday.
Neighbouring districts have been put under Orange alert, indicating heavy to very heavy rainfall (12–20 cm). As of Thursday evening the storm lay 670 km south-southeast of Chennai, bringing torrential rains over Sri Lanka.
The dreadful natural phenomenon, which intensified from a depression in under 24 hours, originated over the southwest Bay of Bengal near Pottuvil in Sri Lanka and is now moving north-northwest with high-speed winds. IMD classified it as a cyclonic storm, with no forecast of Ditwah turning into a severe cyclone.
