Mumbai: Mumbaikars witnessed a scorching heat on Tuesday as temperature in the city crossed 39 degrees Celsius. The weather report released by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in the evening said that the Santacruz observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 39.2 degrees Celsius, which was 6.8 degrees Celsius above normal. While, the Colaba observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 38 degrees Celsius, which was as much as 6.9 degrees Celsius above normal.

Notably, the IMD on Monday had withdrawn the heatwave warning for the city for Tuesday, March 11. However, the mercury jumped afternoon and a heatwave for the day was declared.

“The temperature increased due to strong easterly winds and high pressure winds across the state. This has resulted into rise in afternoon temperature not only in Mumbai but other regions as well,” said IMD Mumbai Director Sunil Kamble.

The 39.2 degrees Celsius of the maximum temperature Mumbai recorded on Tuesday was one of the highest March temperatures. However, first time in earlier days of the month. In the last temperature has crossed above 40 degrees Celsius in March in 2015, 2018, 2019 and 2021. The highest ever March temperature was recorded on 28 March 1956 at 41.7 degrees Celsius.

The IMD has not issued a heatwave warning for Wednesday, however, for the next two days the ‘hot and humid conditions’ will continue, the weather report mentions. The forecast for ‘hot and humid conditions’ is given particular for the Konkan region – which includes Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad and Ratnagiri.

For Mumbai City and Suburbs, the maximum and minimum temperatures for the next 24 hours are likely to be 39 degrees Celsius and 23 degrees Celsius, respectively.

The other cities in Maharashtra which also witnessed rise in maximum temperatures on Tuesday were : Ratnagiri at 39.4 degrees Celsius, Solapur at 38.6 degrees Celsius, Jalgaon and Malegaon at 38.4 degrees Celsius and Thane-Belapur at 38.2 degrees Celsius among others. (Can be used as Box)

Meanwhile, the Mumbai Municipal Corporation has issued an advisory for the citizens for control and prevention from heatstroke considering the consistent hot and humid weather. The civic authorities have advised citizens to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, staying hydrated with plenty consumption of water and juices, using loose cotton clothes and consult medical practitioners if heatstroke like symptoms are experienced.
