La Nina’s Impact On India: Several states of India may soon feel intense winter chills. The Meteorological Department has warned of increasing cold in northern and central India. As per the weather department, snowfall is expected in hilly regions such as Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. In the coming days, states like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh will feel winter chills as the temperature is expected to drop further. The mercury has already dropped below 10 degrees Celsius in 12 districts of Rajasthan. This winter is expected to be much colder.
What Is IMD’s Latest Forecast For Winter
The India Meteorological Department has stated that night temperature to drop sharply in several states, specially in the northern region, as rain, snowfall and cold winds are expected in coming days. The weather department has advised people to take precautions.
As per International Meteorological Department (IMD), the current western disturbance is expected to bring moderate showers and snowfall to hilly state like – Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. Plains will experience chilly winds following the snowfall in the mountains, causing night temperatures to drop.

What Advisory IMD Has Issued?
The IMD has advised caution, especially for farmers and those travelling in the morning. Notably, cold waves have already hit several parts of Rajasthan. Temperatures dropped below 10 degrees Celsius in 12 districts of the state. Hilly area of Rajasthan – Sikar – recorded the lowest temperature in the state at 7 degrees Celsius. Additionally, cities like – Alwar, Jhunjhunu, and Udaipur recorded the coldest nights of the season.
Weather Changed In Madhya Pradesh And Bihar
In Madhya Pradesh’s cities – Bhopal, Rajgarh, Indore, and Shajapur reported a sharp drop in the temperature. Rajgarh recorded 7 degrees Celsius. Several districts of the state are experiencing cold waves.
States like – Bihar, Punjab, and South India are also reeling under the cold.
In Chhattisgarh, a cold wave alert has been issued for the Surguja region. Pendra recorded the nighttime temperature of 9 degrees Celsius.
In Punjab, the mercury has dropped by about 2 degrees, and in Bihar’s Patna recorded 17.8 degrees Celsius.
What Is La Nina?
La Nina is a cooler version of the broader natural climate phenomenon – El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). Notably, ENSO has three versions or phases: El Nino, Neutral, and La Nina. The natural cycle alternates between warmer and cooler ocean temperatures in a specific area near the equator in the tropical Pacific Ocean. This phenomenon takes place every two to seven years and has a significant impact on the global climate, leading to an increased likelihood of floods, heavy rainfall, droughts, snowfall, and other unpredictable weather patterns. It also influences the Indian monsoon and winter seasons.
