Each time the Indian Army carries out a major action, it is often given a name that is memorable, symbolic, and powerful. But have you ever thought about who decides these names? And what is the process behind naming these military operations?

When and how do these names come?

From Operation Vijay, Operation Meghdoot, and Operation Bandar, to now Operation Mahadev, these names carry a deep sense of pride for every Indian. Each time the Indian Army carries out a major action, it is often given a name that is memorable, symbolic, and powerful.

But have you ever thought about who decides these names? And what is the process behind naming these military operations?

These names are usually chosen by the Indian Armed Forces or Intelligence agencies, and often reflect the spirit, goal, or message of the mission. While there is no fixed rule, names are selected in a way that they are motivating, easy to remember, and sometimes even inspired by Indian mythology, nature, or national values.

How do military operations get their names?

Just like we plan carefully before doing any important task, the Indian Army also makes a detailed strategy before launching any military operation. Where the operation will happen, who will be the targets, and how it will be carried out, all of this is decided in advance. Based on this plan, the government or army gives the mission a name.

The meaning behind the name

The name of the operation is not random, it often reflects the purpose or message of the mission. Sometimes, it’s also used to psychologically impact the enemy. The name might also be chosen based on the location or background of the incident.

Military strategies are kept top secret, but the name gives a hint of the mission’s aim.

For example:

  • In Operation Sindoor, the name was chosen because the terrorists had targeted the husbands and left the wife behind. The operation symbolically drew from “sindoor,” the red vermilion worn by married Hindu women, honouring the widows left behind. It was reportedly personally chosen by Prime Minister Modi.
  • During the Balakot airstrike, the mission was given the code name Operation Bandar (Monkey), inspired by Lord Hanuman, who entered Lanka and set it on fire. Similarly, the Indian Air Force went deep into Pakistan to destroy terrorist camps.
