JD(U) supremo Nitish Kumar is set to be sworn-in as Bihar chief minister for a record 10th time on Thursday.
Nitish Kumar, the chief of the JD(U) party, will take oath to be Bihar’s chief minister for a record 10th time on Thursday, just days after the NDA won a historic victory in the Bihar assembly elections. The final touches are being put in place for the swearing-in ceremony at Gandhi Maidan in Patna. The Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and several NDA leaders are expected to attend. In addition to the main stage, a number of pandals have also been erected to cater for VIPs.
During his 20 years in politics, he has resigned from office eight times. In January 2024, the Nitish Kumar government provided information on the net worth of its cabinet ministers. According to details of assets of the chief minister and his cabinet colleagues uploaded on the Bihar government website on December 31, Kumar has Rs 21,052 in cash and nearly Rs 60,811.56 in different banks.
Nitish Kumar owns a flat in Dwarka, Delhi, measuring 1,000 sq. ft. that he purchased in 2004 for Rs 13.78 lakh. Now, the flat is estimated to be worth around Rs 1.5 crore, as reported by Jansatta.
According to the Jansatta report, Nitish Kumar also has 13 cows and ten calves, with an estimated value of Rs 1.45 lakh. He has one Ford EcoSport car valued at Rs 11.32 lakh. In addition, he has gold and silver jewelry valued at Rs 1.28 lakh.
According to his latest disclosure of assets, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar owns movable and immovable assets worth Rs 1.64 crore, as reported by news agency PTI.
According to the disclosures made by the CM on the website of the Cabinet Secretariat Department, Kumar has total movable properties worth around Rs 16,97,741.56, while he has immovable assets worth Rs 1.48 crore, as cited by news agency PTI.
Nitish Kumar’s political career has spanned four decades, with significant shifts in alliances, well-considered policies, and an understanding of adapting to prevailing political waves. Kumar began his career in Janata Dal, winning his first Assembly election in 1985. During this phase, he was Lalu Prasad Yadav’s close companion and supported him when he became Leader of the Opposition in 1989. However, he slowly became disgruntled, along with some of his ideological colleagues, with Lalu’s increasingly centralized control over the party.
In 1994, Nitish played a pivotal yet low-key role in one of the first substantial rebellions against Lalu Prasad. A group of 14 MPs, led publicly by George Fernandes but driven strategically by Nitish, broke away to form Janata Dal (George). The faction soon evolved into the Samata Party, marking Nitish Kumar’s first decisive political separation from Lalu and his initial attempt to build an independent political identity.
