Mozilla has released Firefox 147, the first major Firefox update of 2026. The new version is now available for download and brings a long list of improvements focused on performance, video playback, privacy, and user control.
One of the biggest updates in Firefox 147 is WebGPU support on Apple Silicon Macs. The feature is now enabled across all supported macOS versions. This is an important step for graphics-heavy web apps and modern web experiences, especially for users on newer Macs.
Video playback also gets a noticeable boost, particularly on PCs with AMD GPUs. Firefox now enables zero-copy playback for hardware-decoded video where supported. This brings AMD systems closer to the performance already seen on Intel and NVIDIA hardware. For users who watch a lot of online video, this should result in smoother playback and better efficiency.
It is also getting an automatic Picture in Picture option. Firefox can now open a Picture in Picture window automatically when a video keeps playing, and the tab moves to the background. This makes multitasking easier, especially when switching between tabs while watching videos.
Firefox 147 also introduces support for Compression Dictionaries. This web standard is already used by several major websites and helps reduce the amount of data needed to load pages. In real-world use, this can lead to faster page loads, especially on slower or limited internet connections.
Firefox has started migrating from the Safe Browsing V4 protocol to the newer Safe Browsing V5 protocol using a local list mode. Users who have Enhanced Tracking Protection set to Strict will now see local network access restrictions enabled by default. Websites will need explicit permission to access local network resources, adding an extra layer of protection.
For users who like customization, Firefox 147 adds experimental support for custom keyboard shortcuts. This feature allows users to change default shortcuts, avoid conflicts with other apps, or create shortcuts that are easier to remember. It can be accessed by typing about:keyboard in the address bar.
The update also includes platform-specific improvements. On Linux systems using GNOME Mutter, Firefox now delivers sharper rendering on fractionally scaled displays by matching window and surface sizes to the actual pixel grid.
Along with new features, Firefox 147 fixes several bugs. These include an issue on Windows where tabs could not be selected when the cursor was at the top of the screen, problems with certain HTTP/3 requests, and issues with draggable buttons.
Mozilla has also confirmed that Firefox 147 addresses multiple security vulnerabilities, with detailed information expected to be published later. Additional changes have been made for developers and enterprise users as well.
Firefox 147 is rolling out gradually and should appear in existing installations within a few hours. Users who want the update immediately can download it directly from Mozilla’s servers.
