Indore (Madhya Pradesh): To tackle challenging situations swiftly, the Railways has decided to equip women personnel of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) with chilli spray cans. Female RPF personnel will carry chilli spray cans to handle challenges.
It is non-lethal yet effective tool will help women RPF personnel while performing their duties especially safeguarding female passengers travelling alone or with children to ensure their safer train journeys, according to Railway officials.
By providing chilli spray cans, women RPF personnel will have an additional layer of security, allowing them to deter threats, respond to incidents of harassment and handle emergencies effectively – especially in sensitive areas like isolatedstations, running trains and remote railway locations where immediate backup might not be available.
The role of women RPF personnel extends far beyond security. They frequently assist female passengers in distress, including expectant mothers who go into labour (pains) during train journeys.
This innovative decision of Railways is an important step towards empowering women, strengthening security and making women employees self-reliant.
Providing chilli spray cans will provide additional security to women RPF personnel, enabling them to prevent threats, counter incidents like molestation and handle emergency situations effectively – especially at deserted stations, moving trains and remote railway locations, where it is difficult to provide immediate assistance.
Manoj Yadav, Director General, Railway Protection Force (RPF) said, “This initiative is in line with the Prime Minister’s vision of ‘empowering women and making public places safer’.
Railways has always taken several significant steps to improve the travel experience of women passengers. Our women RPF personnel are a symbol of strength, sensitivity and courage. By providing chilli spray cans, we are enhancing their confidence and efficiency, while also sending a clear message that passenger safety – especially women safety – is our top priority.”
